Anita Hlazo
Pushing Culture Forward
"She empowers Black culture through sustainable, alternative fashion and bold representation."
Biography
Fashion designer and founder of Afrogrunge, Anita Hlazo curates Black culture with alternative subcultures within the South African context. She designs garments reflecting alternative aesthetics and fashions them on Black bodies in township spaces across South Africa. Her practice centers sustainability by repurposing garment excess through patchwork, combining her discarded fabrics with donated materials from individuals and companies. Originally creating visual references on Tumblr for young Black people resonating with grunge aesthetic, she now works toward being the go-to shop for alternative fashion eLokshini. She drives culture forward by proving representation and access matter, creating space for Black South Africans into rock music and alternative subcultures to see themselves reflected and celebrated.
